Sextant was Herbie Hancock's first album on Columbia Records. It was a complex, harmonically and rhythmically challenging musical statement.[citation needed] Hancock was no stranger to electronic music, having used synthesisers extensively during his short time with Warner Bros. Records, but Sextant took his sound to a new level.
Made up of just three tracks, the funkier elements of tracks such as "Hornets", also point toward the commercial success he would enjoy in the 80s
with Sextant's poor album sales influencing his move into more mainstream music with Head Hunters.

It was recorded in Japan in 1974 while Hancock was touring and first released on the Japanese CBS Sony label in September 21, 1974. Hancock performs "Maiden Voyage" and "Dolphin Dance" acoustically, while "Nobu" and "Cantaloupe Island" were performed on electric keyboards. It has never been released on CD outside Japan,
The track "Nobu" is regarded by many (including Kirk Degiorgio of As One) as the first ever techno track, due to its other-worldly repetitive electronic groove.
Kirk DeGiorgio of As One claims that "Nobu" is the first ever techno track, and despite the song's lack of repetitive beats the argument makes sense in a way; the alien-sounding, icey synth washes and sequenced pulse of this piece definitely makes it sound amazingly ahead of its time.

The composition "Actual Proof" was originally written for the film The Spook Who Sat By the Door, and Hancock has used it as a demonstration of his style of playing the Fender Rhodes piano.[2]
The composition "Butterfly" would subsequently be performed on the live album, Flood, and two more studio releases: Direct Step and Dis Is Da Drum. Butterfly also features on the Eddie Henderson album Mahal(1978), which Herbie features on.

It is arguably one of his most funk influenced albums and it represents his further departure from the "spacey, higher atmosphere jazz," as he referred to it, of his earlier career. Hancock uses more funk based rhythms around the hi-hat, and snare drum.
The tracks are characterized by short, repeated riffs by both the rhythm section, horns accompaniment, and bass lines. Man-Child features less improvisation from the whole band and more concentrated grooves with brief solos from the horns
Paul Jackson, Bill Summers, Harvey Mason, Bennie Maupin, and Mike Clark (who replaced Harvey Mason post-1974) formed the core of the group the Headhunters with which Hancock had toured and recorded for the previous three years. This was their final album as a group.

The album clearly followed from its predecessor Man-Child. As ever, Paul Jackson's basslines were critical, and the other regular memberBennie Maupin continued to provide most of the solos alongside Hancock. Man-Child had seen the addition of electric guitar to Hancock's sound, and Secrets saw the guitar's place in the arrangements rise to crucial importance throughout. The flamboyant rhythm guitar contributions of top Motown session musician Wah Wah Watson are a particularly notable feature of the album.
Where Man-Child was evenly divided between up-tempo and laid-back tracks, Secrets emphasised the more mellow, softly rounded mood. Even the more up-tempo tracks, "Doin' It" and "Cantaloupe Island", are suffused with a relaxed Caribbean influence, and overall the album tends towards restrained, rolling grooves rather than overtly high-energy funk. Appropriately, Hancock spent much of his time using the mellow tones of the Rhodes piano, and took advantage of the new polyphonicsynthesizers to contribute thick pads, foreshadowing ambient music.
