Directstep, released only in Japan, was one of the earliest albums ever released on CD. Webster Lewis became second keyboardist on this album in order for Hancock to handle the multiple layers of electronic texture that he hoped to achieve. Hancock re-recorded "I Thought It Was You" (originally on Sunlight), making it even more electronic with hisvocoding. Butterfly was also re-recorded (originally on Thrust) makingDirectstep the second album after the original version (the first beingFlood), to have a rendition of "Butterfly". (The fourth would be Dis Is da Drum and the tune is also featured on Kimiko Kasai's LP, Butterfly, which Herbie plays on.) "Shiftless Shuffle" would later be re-recorded for 1980'sMr. Hands.

For the rabid audiophiles in Japan, Herbie Hancock went to Tokyo to record a direct-to-disc LP that later became one of the world's earliest CD releases. Due perhaps to the arduous one-take-only nature of the direct-to-disc process, Hancocktakes the rare step of using a second keyboardist, Webster Lewis, to handle the multiple electronic textures; the rest of the cast is a quorum of Headhunters (Bennie Maupin, reeds; Paul Jackson, bass; Bill Summers, percussion), plus guitarist Ray Obiedo and drummer Alphonse Mouzon.

1978 年 10 月 Hancock 回到東京透過『原版直刻技術』(direct-to-disc) 錄製專輯Directstep, 這張專輯隨後成為史上最早發行的 CD 之一,或許是因為『原版直刻技術』只能一次錄音的關係, Hancock 罕見地安插第二鍵盤手 Webster Lewis,負責多重電子結構.
有些地方聽起來有些羞怯,有結構,不過開場曲 Butterfly 卻呈現分裂不和諧,第二首曲 Shiftless Shuffle 終於發展出小酒館般的 groove,漫長的尾曲 I Thought It Was You 延伸自另一張專輯 Sunlight 的同名開場曲.

黑膠唱片的音質遠優於 CD,尤其是貝斯與鼓的部分.

generally limited to 16 minutes per side, including sufficient spacing beyween songs. a grent challenge for the musicians.
